Grebe’s has been in the news recently and you can’t miss the common theme. It’s all about our baked goods: doughnuts or donuts, cookies, paczki, and — of course — crullers.
First, we were proud to get a mention in the recently released “111 Places in Milwaukee That You Must Not Miss“. Author Michelle Madden is a Wauwatosa native who is now a screen writer living and working in Los Angeles. She gets back to Milwaukee several times a year so she knows where all the best, lesser known places are. For example, Grebe’s Bakery. NPR decided to highlight five of the 111 places and we can’t question their wisdom in mentioning “Grebe’s Bakery for some crullers” (Chapter 31).
There really is something about Grebe’s crullers and Milwaukee, isn’t there? The Milwaukee Cruller is based on the German and Dutch recipe, not the French recipe, which is an easy mistake to make if you’re not from here. As they say, there’s nothing twisted about them. In fact, our recipe and method of preparation is a family secret. But we do make sure that there are plenty of nooks and crannies for the glaze to settle into before it “bursts” into your mouth. So we agree with Ms. Madden that they “must not” be missed.
Next, we really loved the opening line in the Milwaukee Record article “Dollars For Donuts: Grebe’s Bakery”. They begin, “If you’re reading this article and you’ve had a donut in the past 80 years, there’s a very good chance that you’ve had a Grebe’s.” Yes. That’s right. The article tells the story of Irene Grebe and her homemade butterhorns. The images alone in this article will make you want to jump in your car and drive over to see us. We hope you’ll do that. They recommend a stop if you’re in the neighborhood. We recommend making a special trip.
Then of course there is National Donut Day, or Doughnut Day if you prefer. Grebe’s Bakery was recommended by several local sources as one of the best places to get your donut fix. OnMilwaukee even went so far as to encourage you to be a glutton. And why not with our National Donut Day special – buy (almost) anything, get a FREE donut! If you missed it this year, we’ll be doing it again in 2020.
Several months before donut day, Milwaukee Magazine accused us of bringing “the heat when it comes to paczki.” What can we say? We can’t deny it. If you’ve ever wondered what a paczki is, we invite you to read the article and get a taste (or a dozen) next year on Fat Tuesday.
Our Milwaukee Bucks themed cookies got a mention on TMJ4 sports during the playoffs. Looking at the photo, we can’t help but get nostalgic. Those were some good cookies.
Finally, we prove our Wisconsin credentials every year at the Milwaukee Brewer’s “Arctic Tailgate” in February. Not for the faint of heart, the event allows fans to camp out overnight in order to be first in line to purchase single game tickets for the regular season. We provide the (free) donuts on Saturday morning.
Our multiple mentions in the press just go to prove that if you discover something great, you have to tell someone. Discover something great. Stop by today.
